MRI machine in CHK awaits repair.
Karachi -- The new Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine of Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK) has been non-functional for seven months and await repairing. Due to the delay in repair, patients are facing problems. CHK sources said that a new MRI machine was brought about one year ago and administration started running it on trial basis but developed some problems.
They said under the warranty, the machine could be repaired, but due to the apathy of CHK administration, it is out of order for the last six months. According to sources, majority of admitted and OPD patients of different wards have been compelled to pay heavy fees in account of their tests by some private hospitals in the city. The private hospitals normally charges Rs 5,000 to 20,000 for MRI test, putting unnecessary burden on the pockets fo poor people.
A large number of patients visit CHK from different areas of Karachi, Sindh and Balochistan province for treatment on daily basis. Patients are being tested for MRI with complaints like backbone, brain and bones problems. In past, they used to get this facility free of charge at CHK. The patients have demanded of CHK administration and other high-up for early repairing of machine.
Medical Superintendent (MS) of CHK Prof Dr M Saeed Quraishi when contacted said CHK administration had been in constant contact with the supplier for early repairing of MRI machine as per agreement. He said there was no any fault in machine, but due shortage of Helium gas in market the company administration was unable to make it functional.
He said concerned company had given 15th December date for provision of gas and hoped that machine would start operating soon if the company arranges gas for machine. President Pakistan Paramedical Staff Association (PPSA) Karachi Division Nazeer Abbasi said some government hospitals' officials with nexus of private hospital mafia were involved in such cases to provide benefit to private hospitals.
He demanded of the health secretary and other high-ups to probe deliberate delay in MRI repairing by the administration of hospital and take action against involved officials.
