 MRA ANNOUNCES EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT PROMOTION
 IRVINE, Calif., July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Mazda Research and


Development of North America Inc. (MRA) today announced the promotion of Tom Matano to executive vice president for design and special projects, effective immediately. He will also join MRA's board of directors.
 In his new position, Matano will act as assistant to MRA President Yutaka Hirose in planning and implementing programs to increase MRA's vehicle development capabilities. In the president's absence, Matano will assume responsibility as head of MRA's western operations. In addition, Matano will maintain his responsibility for the management of MRA's Design Division.
 Matano, a permanent resident of the United States, began his career at MRA as the chief designer in 1983. He worked closely on the Miata and MPV projects during his first year with MRA, before he began working on the new R&D Center building design. He was promoted to vice president of the Design Division in 1988. In that capacity he directed MRA's design work on the Mazda MX-3, 929, RX-7, MX-6 and Navajo, in conjunction with Mazda's design headquarters in Japan.
 His extensive career includes numerous vehicle design positions worldwide at companies such as BMW AG in Germany, General Motors Holden's Limited in Australia and General Motors Design in Warren, Mich., as well as contract positions at Volvo AB, in Sweden and Japan.
 In addition to MRA's Irvine offices, the company also has operations located in Ann Arbor and Flat Rock, Mich. Koji Kurimoto serves as executive vice president of those MRA operations. MRA is part of Mazda's worldwide research and development operations, which has headquarters in Hiroshima, Japan with operations in Yokohama, Japan and near Frankfurt, Germany.
