MPs pass UCy budget after heated debate.
AFTER a lengthy discussion the House on Friday approved the 2017 budget for the University of Cyprus with 44 votes in favour and two abstentions by Elam.
The medical school was at the centre of the heated debate. Diko MP Zacharias Koulias said as chairman of the audit committee he received a number of complaints about the school. He voiced concerns about the recognition of degrees and questioned the competency of staff, mentioning that students who are in their fifth year have yet to see a corpse.
Disy MP Nicos Tornaritis warned that when we defame the university, we defame the Cyprus republic itself, while Edek chief Marinos Sizopoulos expressed the opinion that the allegations are serious and need to be addressed.
The House finally proceeded to vote in favour of the budget after the chair of the education committee, Kyriakos Hadjiyiannis, assured the assembled MPs that the committee would work on solving the problems before the parliament's summer recess.
The budget for this year is a total of e1/4130,518,000. Of that, e1/426m are earmarked for construction, e1/4713,000 for the maintenance and operation of computer systems, e1/4632,000 for software licenses and e1/49,000 for legal fees.
