MP Baatyrbekov proposes to increase excise tax on beer import into Kyrgyzstan.

Member of the Parliament of Kyrgyzstan Almazbek Btyrbekov has proposed to raise the excise tax on beer import into Kyrgyzstan.

Last year, Kyrgyzstan has adopted several legal acts aimed at increasing the excise tax, the MP reminded on April 24 at a plenary session. "Today, the results of this move influence on beer production."

Thus, beer producers pay 12 som ($0.22) of excise tax in Kyrgyzstan. "In neighboring Russia, they pay 24 som ($0.44) if we exchange the currency... They benefit from beer production in Russia, after bring it in Kyrgyzstan and pay 12-som excise tax," Btyrbekov explained.

"As a result, domestic producers cannot compete with them; and large share of the market is occupied by importers. Summer is coming, and the excise tax has to be urgently increased to at least 20 som ($0.36) for importers. This move will support the local producers and replenish the budget," he added.
