HART'S WAR

I THINK I prefer Bruce Willis's bald roles. With hair he looks like the teenage Homer Simpson instead of Col McNamara - the senior US officer in a German POW camp.

He's a real dark horse and you'll spend the movie wondering what he's keeping under that wig of his.

Irish actor Colin Farrell, who made his mark in the Vietnam movie Tigerland, stars as new POW Lt Thomas Hart, who's ordered to defend a black officer accused of murdering a white soldier. The cultured camp commandant who allows this court martial to go ahead (Marcel Iures) isn't your typical Col Klink.

He alone seems to enjoy the irony of American boys coming over to fight the wicked Nazis while upholding racism in their own ranks and back home.

THE MAJESTIC

WARNING: this film contains a scene in which Jim Carrey reduces listeners to tears by reading aloud from the American Constitution.

Carrey is Peter Appleton, a Hollywood writer who's implicated in the McCarthy era Commie witch-hunt. He gets drunk, crashes his car into a river and washes up with amnesia in Lawson, California.

Locals, who lost more than 60 sons in the Second World War, think he's Luke Trimble, who was reported missing in action. Luke's dad (Martin Landau) believes this most of all.

If the Hollywood blacklist still existed, I'd nominate director Frank Darabont and screenwriter Michael Sloane for crimes against logic.NOT ANOTHER TEEN MOVIE

ACTUALLY it's all teen movies. Little spoofs of other films stitched together to make one new comedy that touches all the bases: the prom, big football game, cheer leaders and the rebel-without-a-Porsche girl with glasses.

But unless you specialise in teens on screen, the amusing nods to She's All That, Varsity Blues, American Pie, Bring It On, Cruel Intentions, Never Been Kissed, The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink and The Karate Kid and so on will be wasted. As will the Molly Ringwald cameo. The exploding toilet needs no explanation.

I was surprised the prom king and queen didn't get drenched in blood, or other bodily fluid, a la Carrie. Perhaps they're saving it for Another Another Teen Movie.
