MOTRIN IB FASTCAP PACKAGE INTRODUCED

KALAMAZOO, Mich., Nov. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- The Upjohn Company (NYSE: UPJ) announced today the introduction of the FastCap package for bottles of Motrin IB pain reliever/fever reducer. Designed for adults who have difficulty opening analgesic packages, Motrin IB tablets and caplets in the FastCap package will appear on retail shelves by Dec. 1.
The Motrin IB FastCap package opens with just a quarter-turn of its easy-to-open cap. Consumers simply grip and turn a large square tab atop the cap. No pushing down or squeezing is needed, and the square- sided bottle is easy to hold. A long slender object -- such as a pencil -- may be inserted into a hole in the tab for added leverage.
Even the foil safety seal located under the cap offers a pull tab for easy removal.
Tom Laughlin, corporate vice president and general manager, Upjohn Consumer Products, expects the FastCap package to be especially popular with older consumers and arthritis sufferers.
"Arthritics and adults over fifty look for four key features in an analgesic," said Laughlin. "Specifically, the product must be highly efficacious, easy to swallow, provide a good value and offer a package that can be easily opened. With the new FastCap package, Motrin IB delivers solidly on all four key features."
Laughlin also expects the FastCap package to strengthen the Motrin IB business by drawing high-consumption arthritis sufferers from competing
analgesics. "Arthritis accounts for nearly one-third of analgesic purchases," he said, "and arthritis pain is the number one reason adults over fifty consume significantly more analgesics than younger users."
The new FastCap design will appear on 130-count packages of Motrin IB tablets and caplets.
The FastCap package is the second line extension of the Motrin IB brand in the past two months. In September, Upjohn introduced Motrin IB Sinus caplets for relief of sinus pain and congestion. Each is a result of the marketing agreement formed earlier this year between Upjohn and McNeil Consumer Products Company intended to grow the Motrin IB brand.
Motrin IB tablets and caplets in the FastCap package join a list of venerable products marketed by the Upjohn Consumer Products Division including: Motrin IB Sinus caplets, Dramamine and Dramamine II motion sickness remedies, Cortaid and Maximum Strength Cortaid antipruritics, Kaopectate and Kaopectate II antidiarrheals, Mycitracin topical antibiotic, Progaine shampoo, Doxidan and Surfak laxatives and Unicap multivitamins.
The Upjohn Company is a worldwide, research-based provider of human health care products, animal health products, agronomic and vegetable seeds and specialty chemicals. Headquartered in Kalamazoo, the company has been dedicated to improving health and nutrition for more than a century.
