MOTOROLA WINS CONTRACT FOR ITS NEW WIRELESS LOCAL LOOP PRODUCT

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill., April 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Motorola's Cellular Infrastructure Group (CIG) received its first contract for its Wireless Local Loop (WILL(R)) product from Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT), it announced today.
The WILL(R) product was developed to provide basic telephone services in difficult to reach areas or where telephone service is non- existent. Offered as a trial system to the Sri Lankan government, WILL was installed in the rural area of Teldeniya outside the city of Kandy in time for Sri Lanka's Presidential Mobile Secretariat.
Comparable to a "townhall" meeting, the Presidential Mobile Secretariat is a three day event where government officials, including President Ranasinghe Premadasa, travel to remote areas where access to governmental services are limited, in an attempt to resolve the problems of the local citizens. Held once in four months at different sites, the Presidential Mobile Secretariat drew an estimated 20-30,000 people to Teldeniya.
Telecommunication services were limited in Teldeniya and provision of the new facility boosted the economy and government action in the area. The WILL system provided basic telephone service to the village of Teldeniya by interfacing with central office equipment in Kandy, and salvaged radio equipment in Digana.
The major system components used in the WILL implementation were a Motorola cellular base station, a WILL system controller and a Digital Loop Concentrator (DLC). A number of benefits are realized since the system interfaces directly with any telephone central office exchange and uses radio frequency via cellular as a substitute for copper wire in the local loop. For SLT, telephony services were quickly deployed: the system was installed within two weeks in time for the Presidential Mobile Secretariat.
The system served 15 government officials at the event and proved so successful that it was purchased to support the day to day operations of the village. Awards from SLT for additional sites are expected in the near future. "We are pleased that WILL was an integral part of the SRI Lankan government's activities and has now been purchased to support the ongoing needs of the area," said Pertti Johansson, vice-president and general manager of Motorola's International Cellular Infrastructure Division, CIG. "We provided a successful and timely solution to Sri Lanka Telecom's needs and are confident that we can meet their future requirements."
