MOTOROLA RECEIVES JAPANESE DIGITAL CELLULAR AWARD
 FROM TU-KA CELLULAR TOKYO
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill., July 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Motorola, Inc.'s (NYSE: MOT) commitment to the Japanese telecommunications market continues today with the awarding of a major customer contract. TU-KA Cellular Tokyo has awarded Motorola the contract to supply the RF cell site equipment for the 1.5 GHz digital cellular network, the company announced.
"Motorola is pleased to have been awarded this latest Japanese supply contract," said Jack Scanlon, corporate vice president and general manager of Motorola's Cellular Infrastructure Group. "The selection by TU-KA of Motorola digital cellular base station equipment strengthens our position as a leading system supplier in Japan, earned by a reputation of providing leading-edge cellular technologies worldwide."
Motorola was selected by TU-KA Cellular Tokyo because of its innovative cell site design which provides more efficient use of the radio frequency spectrum allocated for cellular service.
"This 1.5 GHz digital cellular system award provides a significant increase to the already highly successful Motorola's analog cellular business in Japan," said Pertti Johansson, vice president and director of Motorola's International Cellular Infrastructure Division. Japan is one of the largest cellular markets with an estimated 1.38 million subscribers.
Motorola will deploy cell sites in the regions of Tokyo, Kanagawa, Chiba and Saitama covering the metropolitan areas. Future plans call for expansion to the entire Kanto area, as well as to Yamanashi and Nagano. Motorola and TU-KA Cellular plan the start of service for April 1994.
Additionally, Motorola was recently selected by Japan's Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. (NTT) as the only foreign partner supplier for the joint development of outdoor base station equipment for the company's digital Personal Handy Phone, a personal communications service. Also, Motorola's design of the digital speech encoder/decoder (CODEC) was earlier selected as the standard for all of Japan's digital cellular systems. Competition for the CODEC design standard included one European and six Japanese manufacturers. This is yet another affirmation of the continued success that Motorola has experienced in supplying its customers with quality communication systems.
Motorola has previously been awarded digital cellular system contracts as a base station supplier for GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) operators in European countries such as the United Kingdom, Norway, Sweden, Spain and Germany.
Motorola is the world's leading designer, manufacturer and supplier of cellular systems, infrastructure equipment and subscriber products. The company is also one of the leading providers of electronic equipment, systems components and services for worldwide markets.
