MOTOROLA MICROPROCESSORS BRING NEW PRICE/PERFORMANCE LEVELS TO MOBIUS TECHNOLOGIES' ACCELERATOR BOARD

AUSTIN, Texas, Dec. 1 ~PRNewswire~ -- Motorola's High Performance Microprocessor Division today announced that its 68040 and 68LC040 microprocessors provide the processing power for Mobius Technologies' new Mobius 040 accelerator boards. The Mobius 040 offers Macintosh users Quadra-level performance, universal one-card design supporting 10 Macintosh models, and a wide range of speed and processor enhancements to meet end-user needs. Available in the first quarter of 1993, the Mobius 040 will come in two processor speeds: 25 MHz and 33 MHz with additional speeds to follow.
Its impressive workstation-level performance makes the Mobius 040 ideal for highly graphical or data intensive applications such as spreadsheets, CAD, page layout and color graphics. The substantial increase in system performance for these types of applications results in increased user productivity.
"The impressive performance of the 68040 and LC040 microprocessors -- and the attractive price of the LC040 -- allows Mobius to customize their boards to meet a variety of user needs," said Jim Reinhart, Motorola's manager of M68000 marketing and applications. "Motorola's microprocessors have been powering Mobius' impressive boards for many years, and we are proud to be part of another competitive end-user product."
The Mobius 040's processor direct (PDS) design offers compatibility with hardware and software. The PDS design eliminates the need to add memory onto the board. In addition, full dynamic bus sizing has also been implemented to further increase compatibility with third-party hardware peripherals. The Mobius 040 also increases user compatibility with its software control panel that allows users to easily select between -030 and -040 cache modes.
"We are finding that many existing 68030-based Macintosh users are facing bottlenecks with data-intensive applications," said Kamran Mohsenin, president of Mobius Technologies. "The Mobius 040 accelerator board offers current 030-based users a cost-effective, compatible upgrade path to reach and actually exceed Quadra speeds."
By utilizing Motorola's 68LC040, Mobius is able to offer the Mobius 040 at prices starting at $799. The 68LC040 maintains the same high performance as the 68040 but lacks the floating point unit. The Mobius 040 will be available in the first quarter of 1993 at the following prices:
 Model Microprocessor Price
 Mobius 040 - 25 MHz 68LC040 $799
 Mobius 040 w~FPU - 25 MHz 68040 $999
 Mobius 040 w~FPU - 33 MHz 68040 $1,199
Additional models of the Mobius 040 will be available following the release of upgraded microprocessors. For additional product information, please contact Mobius at 510-654-0556.
