MOTOROLA IS SUPPLIER AND PARTNER OF URUGUAY'S FIRST CELLULAR SYSTEM
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill., Nov. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Motorola, Inc.'s (NYSE: MOT) Radio-Telephone Systems Group announced today that Movicom has initiated the commercial service of a new cellular system in Montevideo, Uruguay. Movicom is the name which Abiatar -- a multi- national consortium whose major partners are BellSouth Corporation and Motorola, Inc. -- uses to market cellular serices and products in Uruguay.
The AMPS (Advanced Mobile Phone Service) 800 MHz cellular system has been supplied by Motorola and is the first to go into service in that country. Before year end, cellular service coverage will be extended to the resort center of Maldonado/Punta del Este, and roaming will be implemented between Uruguay and Argentina's Greater Buenos Aires area. The roaming service, made possible by Motorola's unique DMX (Distributed Mobile Exchange) networking technology, will allow subscribers to place and receive calls anywhere in both countries' cellular service areas.
The consortium plans to invest in excess of $10 million for the countrywide development of the network, which will serve a population of over 1.5 million people.
"Participation in Uruguay's cellular venture confirms Motorola's commitment to the ongoing development of Latin America's cellular telecommunications, both as supplier and investor," said J. Michael Norris, vice president of Motorola, Inc., and director of the Radio- Telephone Systems Group's joint ventures operations.
The Abiatar consortium's partners, besides BellSouth and Motorola, include BGH, Argentina's leading mobile communications equipment manufacturer, and SOCMA, an Argentine automobile, construction and services company, as well as private Uruguayan investors.
Motorola is the world's leading designer, manufacturer and supplier of cellular systems, infrastructure equipment and subscriber products. The company is also a leading provider of electronic equipment, systems, components and services for worldwide markets. Other products include two-way radios, pagers, semiconductors, defense and aerospace electronics, automotive and industrial electronics equipment, computers, data communications and information processing and handling equipment.
