MOTOROLA INTRODUCES PERSONAL CELLULAR TELEPHONE FOR RETAIL CHANNEL
LAS VEGAS, Nev., Jan. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Today Motorola's (NYSE: MOT) Pan American Cellular Subscriber Group introduced a brand new, uniquely styled pocket cellular telephone for selected retail distribution through its Consumer Products Division for delivery during the first quarter.
This new pocketable phone weighs just 9.6 ounces. The phone boasts a talk time of up to 70 minutes or 12 hours of standby time. Also available are two optional extended operation batteries with up to 100 minutes of talk time or 18 hours of standby time and 150 minutes of talk time or 24 hours of standby time.
An environmentally safe nickel metal hydride battery will also be available. "We as a company are pleased to offer this new battery technology to consumers," said Robert N. Weisshappel, senior vice president and general manager of Motorola's Pan American Cellular Subscriber Group. "This is an exciting opportunity for Motorola in that we are providing leading edge and environmentally safe products."
Some of the useful features of this new personal phone include: 911 override, allowing the user to make emergency phone calls to 911 even when the phone is locked, Turbo Dial(TM) for one touch speed dialing, auto answer and a menu mode which allows the end user to view, select or clear features from a user friendly list.
The phone is uniquely styled and features a large seven segment display with four color-coded status indicators and a large "soft touch" silicon keypad. The keypad area is curved slightly to fit comfortably against the user's face and provide clear, crisp audio. A full line of accessories including batteries, a rapid charger and a three watt power booster will also be available for purchase.
The complete phone package includes a battery, carry case, cigarette lighter adapter for charging the battery in a vehicle and an adapter for charging the battery at home or in the office. The charger, charging indicator and battery meter are integrated into the phone for convenience and consumer friendliness. This particular feature was introduced to the retail market on the original handheld portables manufactured by Motorola's Consumer Products Division.
The Consumer Products Division is a full line supplier of phones to the retail market. The division manufactures Car-to-Car, Soft Pak transportables, mobile and handheld portable cellular phones and cellular accessories as well as the recently introduced cordless telephones featuring Secure Clear(TM) technology for the home.
The new retail personal cellular telephone will be sold in the first quarter of 1992 through select retailers that feature products manufactured by Motorola and will be priced competitively for the retail markets. "This new retail personal phone is evidence of our Consumer Products Division's commitment to the retail cellular market and its unique requirements," said Weisshappel. "Once again, Motorola is taking a leadership role in his growing cellular market segment."
