 MOTOROLA CONTINUES WORLDWIDE TECHNOLOGICAL LEADERSHIP
WITH INTRODUCTION OF LIGHTEST CELLULAR TELEPHONE
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill., Sept. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Today Motorola's Cellular Subscriber Group introduced the MicroTAC Ultra Lite(TM) Telephone, the world's lightest cellular telephone weighing a mere 5.9 ounces and the first cellular phone to break the six ounce weight barrier. The new cellular phone represents a decrease in weight of over 20 percent, besting last year's introduction of he MicroTAC Lite at 7.7 ounces -- the first cellular phone to break the half pound weight barrier. With the MicroTAC Ultra Lite model, Motorola Cellular maintains its leadership position within the competitive cellular industry.
The new MicroTAC Ultra Lite offers features designed specifically with the customer in mind. They include: the optional VibraCall(TM), which allows the user to receive calls in a vibration alert mode versus the usual ringer; and nickel metal hydride batteries that offer extended talk times beyond those available with current nickel cadmium batteries.
"Our customers continue to indicate that they prefer lightweight, fully featured and technologically advanced cellular phones," said Robert N. Weisshappel, senior vice president and general manager of Motorola's Cellular Subscriber Group. "That's what they expect from Motorola. Today's introduction of the MicroTAC Ultra Lite is further evidence of our continued commitment to providing durable and reliable cellular products to consumers who depend on Motorola to provide the latest in cellular innovations."
The MicroTAC Ultra Lite is the latest in the line of innovative personal telephones designed and manufactured by Motorola. The original MicroTAC , the world's first pocketable cellular telephone weighing 10.7 ounces, made its worldwide debut in 1989 and was followed in 1991 by the ground-breaking MicroTAC Lite. Each phone bested its predecessor in weight and features -- each upgrade based upon consumer demand.
"At 5.9 ounces, the MicroTAC Ultra Lite is the lightest and most highly featured model in a complete line of personal telephones," said Weisshappel. "We have consistently delivered products far above all others in features judged important by the marketplace. Back in 1989, the cellular industry was introduced to the MicroTAC, the first and only personal phone available for purchase. Since that time, a number of other pocket-sized phones have been introduced, yet we believe none have been able to match the superior quality and intense durability for which all Motorola phones are renowned."
Another feature of the MicroTAC Ultra Lite is nickel metal hydride batteries. With these batteries, consumers will receive increased talk times between recharging -- an important feature for frequent cellular phone users. Customers continuously request batteries with additional talk time and, with the nickel metal hydride batteries, a noticeable improvement in battery capacity is realized.
Once again, Motorola introduces another first with the availability of the optional VibraCall feature. Motorola is the only cellular manufacturer in the world to offer this feature and the MicroTAC Ultra Lite is the first cellular phone commercially available in the United States able to offer a vibration alert mode. The phone discreetly oscillates when a call is received so that when worn in a pocket, the vibration can be felt and the call answered. With this option, users may receive a phone call in a vibration alert mode via a silent ringer -- similar to a pager. While the convenience of owning a cellular phone is apparent, some have worried that the sound of their phone ringing may not be appropriate for some situations. Some restaurants and golf courses have actually gone so far as to request that patrons turn off their phones. Business people now have the option of not disturbing others with this new feature. With VibraCall, the cellular phone vibrates to indicate an incoming call, thus avoiding an audible ring and unnecessary interruptions.
With the nickel metal hydride Standard Lite battery, the MicroTAC Ultra Lite has a talk time of up to 65 minutes or nine hours of standby time. With the nickel cadmium Talk PAK XT battery, the phone has up to three hours of talk time or 24 hours of standby time.
Motorola's latest personal phone is manufactured with the same quality, performance and durability for which all other Motorola cellular phones are known. Each and every Motorola phone model is run through a series of tests designed to simulate a variety of extremes including: temperature; shock; vibration; dust; as well as a drop test.
Motorola is the world's leading designer, manufacturer and supplier of cellular subscriber products, infrastructure equipment and systems. The company is also one of the leading providers of electronic equipment, systems components and services for worldwide markets.
