MOTOROLA CELLULAR PHONES TO BEGIN SHIPPING INCREASED TALK TIME
 NICKEL METAL HYDRIDE BATTERIES
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill., Jan. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Today Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) announced plans to ship nickel metal hydride batteries for its line of personal and portable cellular telephones during the first quarter. The batteries not only offer increased capacity, but are considered more environmentally friendly -- an important feature in today's world.
"Motorola's decision to supply nickel metal hydride batteries is an important one," said Robert N. Weisshappel, senior vice president and general manager of Motorola's Pan American Cellular Subscriber Group. "Cellular phone users today want higher capacity and more efficient batteries offering increased talk times. These batteries offer increased convenience in that they'll last longer between charges than those previously available. Also, in today's environment, it is up to major manufacturers such as Motorola to act responsibly and set the stage for others to follow. Our commitment to supplying equipment which is both state-of-the-art and environmentally friendly is one that we as a company take quite seriously."
Nickel metal hydride batteries offer the same voltage (1.2 volts) as current nickel cadmium batteries and provide up to 30 percent higher capacity compared to high grade nickel cadmium batteries. Increased capacity offers the end-user additional battery life, providing more talk time between recharging. Motorola plans to make nickel metal hydride batteries available on its full time of personal and portable phone models.
Additionally, the batteries are designed to fit on existing Motorola phones and chargers. The nickel metal hydride batteries are expected to provide up to 3-1/3 hours of talk time on personal phones and up to almost three hours on hand-held phones.
Motorola is the world's leading designer, manufacturer and supplier of cellular systems, infrastructure equipment and subscriber products. The company is also one of the leading providers of electronic equipment, systems components and services for worldwide markets.
