MOTOROLA BOOSTS CLOCK SPEEDS OF 68EC000
 EMBEDDED-CONTROL MICROPROCESSOR
AUSTIN, Texas, May 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The Microprocessor and Memory Technologies Group of Motorola, Inc. today announced three new versions of its 68EC000 embedded-control microprocessor family that feature faster clock speeds. In addition to the original 8-MHz delivering 1.2 MIPs (VAX million instructions per second), the line now includes a 10-MHz at 1.5 MIPs; a 12.5-MHz at 1.9 MIPs; and a 16.67-MHz at 2.5 MIPs. The 68EC000 is packaged in 68-pin plastic leaded chip carriers (PLCCs) dissipating a maximum of 0.26 watts at 16-MHz, making it well-suited for low powered, space-limited designs.
"First introduced in the second quarter of '91, the 8-MHz 68EC000 set a revolutionary price point for a 32-bit architecture with pricing below $3," said Jim Reinhart, Motorola's manager of 68000 marketing and applications. "With the introduction of faster clock speeds, we are furthering our commitment to lead the industry's price and performance standards, while extending the capabilities of the 68EC000."
Motorola's 68EC0X0 product line, comprised of the 68EC000, 68EC020, 68EC030 and 68EC040, is part of the 68000 family, which has been streamlined for cost-conscious embedded applications. The 68EC000 series has garnered industry-wide acceptance in a broad range of applications from home video games to router processor boards for LANs. The 68EC0X0 family is fully compatible with existing 68000 software and hardware tools.
The 68EC0X0 products are currently available. The 8-MHz 68EC000 is priced at $2.95 each, in quantities of 10,000; the 10-MHz, 12.5-MHz and 16.67-MHz are priced at $3.75, $4.60 and $5.80, respectively, in quantities of 10,000.
For the fourth year in a row, Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector won Dataquest, Inc.'s "Semiconductor Supplier of the Year" award for excellence in 1991.
Having 1991 worldwide sales exceeding $3.6 billion, Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector is the largest U.S.-based broad line supplier of semiconductors, with a balanced portfolio of more than 50,000 devices. Motorola is one of the world's leading suppliers of electronic equipment, systems, components and services for global markets. Products include two-way radios, pagers, telepoint systems, cellular telephone systems, semiconductors, defense and aerospace electronics, automotive and industrial equipment, computers, data communications and information processing and handling equipment.
Motorola was a winner of the U.S. Department of Commerce's first Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award in 1988, in recognition of its superior company-wide quality management process.
