MOTOROLA BOOSTS 68040 MICROPROCESSOR PERFORMANCE TO 40 MHZ; ANNOUNCES VOLUME SHIPPING

AUSTIN, Texas, May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Motorola's (NYSE: MOT) High Performance Microprocessor Division today announced that it has begun shipping its 40-MHz 68040 microprocessor. The 40-MHz 68040 achieves a milestone in the Motorola 68000 Family microprocessor performance -- at 41.8 VAX MIPS, it offers a nearly 60 percent speed increase over the 25- MHz 68040, and runs faster than the 50-MHz Intel 486DX.
"The 68040 is an unrivaled CISC architecture for price/performance computing," said Jack W. Browne, vice president and director, M68000 High-Performance Marketing. "The 40 MHz iteration rounds out the 68040 line, which is now available in three speeds: 25 MHz, 33 MHz and 40 MHz, offering customers a wide variety of high performance options."
Motorola's 68040 provides high internal clock rates with two external input clocks: a bus clock which allows an economical bus interface and a processor clock for the internal circuitry. In addition, the 68040 offers a sophisticated, on-chip cache architecture to better support processor bandwidth requirements.
The 68040's architecture incorporates more than five major units on chip, all of which operate simultaneously to deliver top performance. Recent benchmark data shows that 68040 performance compares favorably to, and often exceeds competitive products operating at twice the frequency. The first member of the 68000 Family to incorporate more than 1.2 million transistors on a single piece of silicon, the 68040 has been adopted by leading and emerging companies around the world for its performance, value and software compatibility.
Available immediately, the 40-MHz 68040 is priced at $393 each in lots of 1,000 in Pin Grid Array ceramic packaging. Motorola also offers 68040 microprocessors at speeds of 33 MHz and 25 MHz for $290 and $245, respectively in quantities of 1,000.
Having 1992 worldwide sales exceeding $4.5 billion, Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector is the largest U.S.-based broad line supplier of semiconductors, with a balanced portfolio of more than 50,000 devices. Motorola is one of the world's leading providers of electronic equipment, systems, components and services for global markets. Products include two-way radios, pagers and telepoint systems, semiconductors, defense and aerospace electronics, automotive and industrial electronic equipment, computers, data communications, and information processing and handling equipment.
Motorola was a winner of the first Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in 1988, in recognition of its superior company-wide quality management process.
