MOTOROLA ANNOUNCES LICENSING AGREEMENT WITH APPLE FOR NEWTON TECHNOLOGY; MOTOROLA TO MANUFACTURE, SELL NEWTON-BASED DEVICES

HANNOVER, Germany, March 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Motorola's Personal Messaging Products, a division of the company's Paging and Wireless Data Group (PWDG), today announced at CeBit an agreement with Apple Computer Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: AAPL) to license Apple's Newton's technology. Motorola (NYSE: MOT) will manufacture and market a handheld device featuring integrated, wireless communications capabilities based on the Newton operating system.
Building on its historical strength in wireless communications areas such as cellular, paging and two-way radio, Motorola plans to bring to market a series of personal intelligent communicators (PICs) worldwide.
"Global implementation of wireless communications is key to Motorla's success," said Bob Growney, PWDG executive vice president and general manager. "To make this vision a reality, we will continue to align ourselves with major industry leaders, including computer and consumer electronics manufacturers, software developers, industry standards groups and service providers."
Gaston Bastiaens, vice president and general manager for Apple's Personal Interactive Electronics division (PIE) today said, "Motorola and Apple have worked together over the years, leveraging the best in each other's technology. Now through this licensing agreement, Motorola will bring to market the power and versatility of Newton technology, combined with Motorola's renowned wireless communications expertise."
Committed to Bringing Wireless Technologies to Marketplace
"As the premier manufacturer of integrated wireless communication devices, Motorola continues to be committed to bringing innovative wireless products to the marketplace," said Growney. "Our goal is to support major industry operating platforms, as well as all wireless networks.
"Motorola believes personal communication is key to an individual's productivity, and this means connectivity -- anytime, anywhere. To achieve that definition, a person's communications capability must be untethered, or wireless. Personal communication doesn't mean finding a phone jack to send a fax or receive an E-mail message; it means using a device, without wires, to send and receive information independent of location."
The Paging and Wireless Data Group incorporates five Motorola divisions involved in the development, manufacturing, marketing and sales of one-way and two-way wireless communications products and services for end users and OEMs. The group also manages Motorola's share of ARDIS, the data network jointly owned with IBM.
Motorola Inc., headquartered in Schaumburg, Ill., is one of the world's leading manufacturers of electronic equipment, systems and components for worldwide markets.
