MOTOROLA ACQUIRES MINORITY INTEREST IN RACOTEK

MINNEAPOLIS, Jan. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Motorola and Racotek, Inc., a Minneapolis-based wireless mobile data communication services company, today announced that Motorola has exercised its option to acquire a minority interest in Racotek, Inc. Terms were not disclosed.
Motorola decided to acquire a minority interest in Racotek after the company successfully developed and tested a RacoNet mobile data communication service utilizing Motorola trunked radio infrastructure. Racotek has immediately moved to the next testing stage utilizing customers with the RacoNet service on Motorola systems in Boston and New Jersey.
"Motorola recognizes the significance of Racotek's mobile communications services and is joining our other investors during a tremendous growth period for the company," said Richard Cortese, Racotek's president and chief executive officer. Motorola's leadership in the wireless communications industry, combined with the innovative mobile data communications solutions provided by our people, position Racotek as the mobile data communications company with choices that no other service can offer.
"Racotek went out into the computer world and established contracts with software integrators to create innovative new applications for mobile communication," said Dale Misczynski, a Motorola corporate vice president. "It just makes sense for Motorola to become a part of this emerging market."
"Before this partnership, Racotek was already established as a leader in the metropolitan-based mobile data communication industry," said Cortese. "Today's investment by Motorola is a signal to the industry of their belief that Racotek is a premier provider of mobile data communication services to companies employing mobile workforces."
Cortese explained that Racotek's relationship with Motorola will continue to grow in areas other than the minority investment announced today. Racotek's president and chief executive officer said negotiations are underway with Motorola to allow Racotek to expand its RacoNet service, a wireless data communication service for metropolitan area workers, to Motorola's CoveragePlus(R) system.
Currently, RacoNet users have the option of using Motorola's trunk service or E.F. Johnson's trunk system for mobile data communication within metropolitan areas. "With CoveragePlus, the RacoNet system will extend wireless data and voice communication beyond metropolitan areas with regional and national service capabilities," said Cortese.
Racotek is the nation's leading metropolitan-based mobile data communication service. Racotek helps companies communicate with mobile workforces. The Minneapolis-based company adapts corporate information systems to communicate voice and data information to and from mobile computers via wireless systems that exist in virtually every metropolitan area in the United States.
