MOTOROLA 33-MHZ 68040 MICROPROCESSORS POWER TEXAS INSTRUMENTS'
 1500 MP MULTI-PROCESSING COMPUTERS
AUSTIN, Texas, April 20 /PRNewswire/ -- The Microprocessor and Memory Technologies Group of Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced that its 33-MHz 68040 provides the processing power of Texas Instruments' new 1500 MP (multi-processing) Computer.
The 1500 MP, one of the first multi-processing systems based on the 33-MHz 68040, delivers three times the CPU performance of earlier MP models. Because of the increased processing power, the new systems have the capability to support large enterprise-wide applications for up to 1,000 users -- twice the number of users supported by existing TI systems.
"By harnessing the functionality and speed of the 33-MHz 68040, TI has effectively tripled the CPU power of the 1500 MP, providing multiple users the level of performance they need for advanced applications," said Jim Reinhart, manager, M68000 marketing and applications. "This power, coupled with TI's Investment Protection Architecture, makes the 1500 MP a great value and an excellent upgrade for users."
TI's "Investment Protection Architecture" enables users who upgrade to the 68040-based 1500 MP system to run existing applications without modification. In addition, U.S. resellers who recently purchased 68030-based 1500 MP systems will in most cases be able to receive a 100 percent trade-in when upgrading.
"With the 68000 Family, TI has continually been able to deliver excellent price/performance." said Ian McMurray, marketing manager for the Computer Systems and Services business of TI's Information Technology Group. "The 68040 extends this tradition, delivering price/performance exceeding many comparable RISC and CISC systems."
The 1500 MP Computer with 33-MHz 68040 processors will be available in both 7-slot and 16-slot chassis models beginning April 30. Prices start at $29,250 and $59,000, respectively.
