MOTOROLA "POCKET PHONE" BALLOON TO FLY AT LAS VEGAS C.E.S. SHOW

LIBERTYVILLE, Ill., Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- A giant version of the world's lightest cellular telephone will be the "talk" of the 1993 Consumer Electronics Show this January 7-10 when the Motorola (NYSE: MOT) "Pocket Phone" takes to the skies over Las Vegas.
Soaring 155-feet high, the Motorola "Pocket Phone" balloon is a massive replica of the award-winning Motorola MicroTAC Digital Personal Communicator(TM) telephone. The balloon has a maximum lift of 1,800 pounds and gross volume of 100,000 cubic feet.
The balloon will sport a Powered By Motorola banner on its gondola. Motorola's Cellular phones depend on many of the company's semiconductors, such as the industry-standard 68HC11 microcontroller. Initiated in 1988, the Powered By Motorola program showcases successful innovations through customer relationships.
"The Motorola Pocket Phone' Balloon has been a sensation at more than 50 European events and the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta," said Robert N. Weisshappel, senior vice president and general manager of Motorola's Cellular Subscriber Group. "The balloon's popularity is fitting with the stature and overall success of the MicroTAC line of cellular phones," he said.
It took tailors 800 hours to sew together 1.91 miles of material to construct the 763-panel balloon. Cameron Balloons, based in the United Kingdom, created the special shape, one of the most difficult to date.
The balloon will be flown by a three-member, all-British crew. They have extensive experience flying standard and special shape balloons all over Europe and are widely acknowledged as one of the U.K.'s leading balloon teams.
Motorola is the world's leading designer, manufacturer and supplier of cellular telephones, infrastructure equipment and systems. The company is also one of the leading providers of electronic equipment, systems components and services for worldwide markets. In 1991, the Motorola Semiconductor Product Sector's worldwide sales exceeded $3.6 billion. Motorola is the U.S. based, broad line supplier of semiconductors, with a balanced portfolio of more than 50,00 devices.
