MOTOROLA'S 88100 RISC MICROPROCESSORS POWER NEW
DATA GENERAL SERVERS FROM 39 TO 235 MIPS
AUSTIN, Texas, July 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The RISC Microprocessor Division of Motorola (NYSE: MOT) today announced that its high- performance 88100 microprocessors are helping boost the performance of new additions to Data General Corporation's AViiON family of RISC-based servers.
The AV 6280, a 235-MIPS system, and the AV 8000-8, are high-end AViiON products that feature eight 88100s configured in pairs on four system boards. This eight-microprocessor configuration more than doubles performance over Data General's existing quad-microprocessor systems, providing the products with near-mainframe processing capability. The two-level cache design further enhances the performance of the new server offerings.
The new mid-range AV 4605, with a single 88100 microprocessor, and the AV 4625, a dual-88100 model, offer 39 and 78 MIPS of performance, respectively. Each of the new servers incorporates a 96 Kbyte data/instruction cache, increasing system performance by up to 40 percent over earlier models.
The high-end AV 6280 and AV 8000-8 servers also benefit from the strength of DG/UX(R) 5.4.2, Data General's implementation of Unix(R) system V, release 4, which features fully symmetric multiprocessing -- a hallmark of the AViiON line. In addition, DG/UX adheres to BCS(tm), a true binary compatibility standard certified by the 88open Consortium Ltd., which allows different computers to run the same software packages without modification.
"Motorola's 88000 architecture is second to none in providing direct support for symmetric multiprocessing," said Gary Montgomery, manager, 88000 marketing. "Motorola's 88000 Family continues to set price/performance benchmarks for RISC microprocessors. Current and future 88000 products will continue to enable Data General and others to build price/performance leadership products."
Motorola's 88000 technology powers a wide range of computer products and systems, including high-performance computers, workstations and networking products.
Having 1991 sales exceeding $3.6 billion, Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector is the largest U.S.-based, broadline supplier of semiconductors, with a balanced portfolio of more than 50,000 devices.
