MOTOROLA'S 68EC040 MICROPROCESSOR POWERS HELIO COMPUTERS' HIGH-SPEED EMBEDDED CONTROLLER

 AUSTIN, Texas, May 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Motorola's (NYSE: MOT) High Performance Microprocessor Division today announced that its 68EC040 microprocessor provides the processing power for Helio Computers' HCP- EC040 embedded controller. The HCP-EC040 embedded controller is a virtual "computer on a board," enabling data-intensive applications to run on a dedicated application accelerator at speeds rivaling high- performance workstations.
 The Motorola 68EC040's streamlined architecture is well suited for CPU-intensive embedded control applications and incorporates a full internal Harvard architecture, multi-staged execution pipeline, multiple internal buses and independent 4K-byte instruction and data caches.
 The HCP-EC040 also offers developers fast bursting DRAM in a SIMM package from 1 to 64 MByte of on-board memory. Also included are input- ouput facilities such as serial and parallel ports, a SCSI header and a 50 pin header for local bus. Consistent with Motorola's 68000 Family, the HCP-EC040 is backed by extensive software support such as a loader- kernel interface, development toolkits for system integration and a high-performance Windows(R) driver. Optimizing C and FORTRAN compilers are also available separately.

 The HCP-EC040 interfaces with PCs via an 8-bit or 16-bit ISA bus and incorporates three user-selectable options for communication with the PC. Implementing a memory map interface, the HCP-EC040 resides in either a 16K, 32K or 64K memory window on single or multiple pages.


Motorola's 68EC040
 The 68EC0x0 is Motorola's third-generation family of 68000- compatible, high-performance 32-bit microprocessors. The 68EC0x0 Family provides an intermediate level of price, performance and functionality between the 68300 Family of integrated processors and the 680x0 Family of central processors. Optimized for embedded control applications, the 68EC0x0 family is a derivative of the 680x0 Family, stripped of all non- essential functionality such as memory management circuitry. Without memory management circuits, the chips become not only smaller, but easier to manufacture, thus reducing costs. Therefore, the 68EC040 offers the price/performance necessary in embedded applications without sacrificing functionality.
