MOTOROLA'S 68000 FAMILY IS CHOSEN AS FIRST TARGET ENVIRONMENT FOR READY
 SYSTEMS' CROSS-DEVELOPMENT ARCHITECTURE
AUSTIN, Texas, Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Motorola's High Performance Microprocessor Division today announced that its 68000 Family of microprocessors is the first to be supported by Ready Systems' Spectra cross-development environment. Spectra is an environment that provides an innovative approach to cross development for real-time embedded systems software, and forms the foundation for Ready's next generation products.
Through the use of its versatile base architecture, selection of well-integrated, off-the-shelf tools and a powerful real-time kernel. Spectra significantly improves productivity, reduces time-to-market and provides increased flexibility to embedded systems developers. The included ToolBuilder(tm) interface allows developers to integrate application-specific tools, thus preserving customers' existing investment in code and tools. Spectra's unique cross-development environment satisfies applications ranging from small, dedicated controllers to large, hierarchical systems.
"As the largest worldwide supplier of embedded control microprocessors, Motorola needs quality support, companies such as Ready Systems, that offer excellent products backed by strong support networks," said Jim Reinhart, Motorola's manager of M68000 marketing and applications. "Spectra, Ready Systems' robust cross-development environment, offers our embedded-control developers a complete and open platform that will help them speed innovative product designs to market."
Spectra is comprised of a comprehensive feature-set and an extensive list of development tools, including:
-- ToolBuilder(tm) Interface that may be utilized to integrate
 application-specific tools or import
 additional tools
-- Target Manager(tm) Resident on the host, it takes over much of
the debugging activity that would otherwise
 burden the target system
 -- Xtrace(tm) Spectra's communication protocol, it allows
 multiple host-resident tools to communicate
with a target system over a network or
 communications link
-- Virtual Target(tm) Permits debugging of embedded applications
without access to a target system
 -- RTsource(tm) Multitasking source-and-assembly-level
debugger, enabling fast and easy debugging
 -- XSH(tm) Host-based shell tool providing a variety
of services for cross development, including
 host target communication, system level
 debugging and incremental linking and
 downloading capabilities
 -- Xconfig(tm) A menu-driven configuration utility that
facilitates setting up a target environment
 -- Nanokernel(tm) A sophisticated and flexible sub-kernel that
 supports multiple Application Programming
Interfaces (APIs) on a single processor
-- VRTXsa(tm) Kernel featuring task scheduling and
documented execution times for all time-
 critical operations, it improves performance
of time-critical calls by an average of 30
 percent
"For the first time, developers have access to a powerful, open cross-development environment that provides support for a wide range of real-time applications," said Jim Ready, president of Ready Systems. "We chose to support the 68000 Family as our initial target environment because of an overwhelming customer demand. We are pleased to be able to service the myriad applications using 68000 Family microprocessors."
All tools can be used to debug board support packages or device drivers, and provide a flexible, powerful and integrated environment for developing any real-time application.
Spectra for SUN/68K, the first product available in the Spectra line, is available immediately in limited quantities. Additional product support will be available in the future.
Having 1991 worldwide sales exceeding $3.6 billion, Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector is the largest U.S.-based broad line supplier of semiconductors, with a balanced portfolio of more than 50,000 devices. Motorola is one of the world's leading providers of electronic equipment, systems, components, and services for global markets. Products include two-way radios, pagers and telepoint systems, cellular telephone systems, semiconductors, defense and aerospace electronics, automotive and industrial electronic equipment, computers, data communications, and information processing and handling equipment.
Motorola was a winner of the first Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in 1988, in recognition of its superior company-wide quality management process.
