MOTORING: Sporting legend is poised for UK debut; NEW REG 2002.
A NEW MINI Cooper S will go on sale in the UK in a few months time, nearly 40 years after the original Cooper S roared onto the roads and became a motor sporting legend and wheels for many celebrities including Peter Sellers and Steve McQueen.
The basis is the same as the new generation MINI One and MINI Cooper that has been taking the world by storm since arriving late last summer.
The difference is the stubby little bonnet housing a modern supercharged version of the proven 1.6-litre engine pumping out 163 bhp and driving the front wheels though a new 6-speed version of the MINI's short shifting gearbox.
To cope with a performance far in excess of the cars that starred in the "The Italian Job" film, the suspension has been specially adapted and safety protection is increased to six airbags. Run-flat tyres are standard and security should be up to a high standard.
This high performance MINI will stand out from its lesser siblings with its redesigned bonnet featuring an eye-catching air intake scoop, chunky bumpers, centrally mounted twin exhaust pipes and black side sills.
A price of pounds 14,500 on the road has recently been announced.
