MOTORCYCLES ROAR TO RAISE MONEY FOR PEDIATRIC BRAIN TUMOR RESEARCH
AT WASHINGTON-BALTIMORE HONDA RIDE FOR KIDS
COLUMBIA, Md., Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- A caravan of hundreds of motorcycles will wind its way through Howard County, Md., on Sunday, Sept. 20, to raise money for pediatric brain tumor research at the Johns Hopkins Oncology Center.
The "Ride for Kids" by Honda will begin at 9 a.m. at the Mall in Columbia, and end at the Howard County Fairgrounds with an awards presentation and celebration. Several young brain tumor patients will be on hand representing the thousands of children who will benefit from the funds raised by Ride for Kids donations.
Seventy-five percent of the proceeds from the Washington- Baltimore Ride for Kids will be given to the Johns Hopkins Oncology Center. The remainder will help fund the Central Brain Tumor Registry, a new, national data bank for researchers.
The Honda Ride for Kids program was started in 1984 by Atlanta native Mike Traynor who saw first-hand the horror of this disease through the child of a close friend.
"This disease attacks the whole family," noted Traynor, the president and founder of the Ride for Kids Foundation. Brain tumors are the number one cause of death by disease among children under age 15. "The severity of this problem can not be overstated," Traynor added.
Since 1984, the Ride for Kids program raised more than $1.4 million. The Washington-Baltimore Ride for Kids is the first for the Mid-Atlantic region and the ninth event this year.
"We're thrilled to hold a Ride for Kids event in the Washington- Baltimore area," said Traynor. "This is a great area for motorcyclists, and we know they're excited about supporting pediatric brain tumor research. Thanks to the support of Honda, Texaco and other corporate sponsors, every penny raised will go directly to brain tumor research. We are especially pleased to help fund the work of the Johns Hopkins Oncology Center."
The Ride for Kids by Honda is sponsored nationally by American Honda Motor Co. and Honda dealers. Local sponsors include: Texaco, BVB Advertising, F&S Graphics, Fleishman-Hillard, Inc., George's Superthrift/IGA, Giant Food, Howard County Police, the Mall in Columbia, Manassas Bakery, Motorcycle Times, Professional Images, Utz Quality Foods, West & Associates and Wolk Press, Inc.
Interested riders may receive more information about the event from a local Honda dealer or by calling 800-673-7220. A minimum donation of $35 is required. Registration will begin at 7 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 20. Riders who raise donations of more than $300 will be eligible for a drawing to win a Honda Gold Wing Motorcycle.
