MOTOR VEHICLE MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION RESPONDS TO ANNOUNCEMENT OF 'GAS GUZZLER' CAMPAIGN

WASHINGTON, Nov. 17 ~PRNewswire~ -- Thomas H. Hanna, president and CEO of the Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Association of the United States (MVMA), issued the following response to today's announcement of the "Gas Guzzler" Campaign:
The campaign announced today by environmentalists to place "tickets" on so-called "gas guzzler" cars, trucks and minivans is an irresponsible attempt to intimidate consumers into buying smaller cars that don't fit their needs.
The organizers of this charade refuse to acknowledge the independent studies that show durability, reliability, safety, comfort, ease of handling and manufacturer reputation rank ahead of fuel economy as factors consumers use in purchasing new vehicles. A dozen or more vehicles are available on the market now that exceed 40 miles per gallon (mpg), but they constitute less than 3 percent of sales.
Currently, there is no domestically produced car that meets the U.S. Department of Transportation's definition of a "gas guzzler."
With the exception of small compact cars, campaign organizers have targeted most cars on the road. With the magnitude of economic problems this country faces, we question whether this effort is truly in the best interest of consumers or the thousands of people dependent on the auto industry for jobs.
MVMA supports programs aimed at educating consumers about the importance of automobile maintenance, encouraging car pooling and developing alternative fuel vehicles.
