AS 1993 TRUCK OF THE YEAR
Jeep Sport/Utility Wins Five of Nine Categories
 In Three-Vehicle Competition
DETROIT, Nov. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- MOTOR TREND magazine, the world's automotive authority, today announced that the Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo V-8 was selected as the publication's 1993 Truck of the Year. The Grand Cherokee was chosen from a field of three nominated trucks that competed in the magazine's fifth annual competition.
The Truck of the Year competition is a sister event to MOTOR TREND's prestigious Car of the Year and Import Car of the Year competitions. It was inaugurated in 1989 in response to the dramatic rise in consumer interest in trucks, sport/utility vehicles, and full-size vans as personal-use transportation. The competition is conducted to identify the most significant new truck-based vehicle of each year.
The Grand Cherokee is the updated, redesigned successor to Jeep's popular Cherokee sport/utility, and the Laredo version is the best- selling model. The addition of Chrysler's optional 220-horsepower 5.2-liter V-8 engine makes the Grand Cherokee the only compact sport/utility below $40,000 to offer a V-8. In winning the competition, it was rated as the best truck by three of the six MOTOR TREND judges. Plus, it had the best scores in five of nine categories, including the objective categories of Performance and Handling, and the subjective categories of Ride & Drive, Chassis Dynamics, and Dollar Value/Market Significance.
MOTOR TREND's editors called the Laredo V-8 "The sports car of sport/utilities," and noted that "The versatility and finesse of the Grand Cherokee combined with the power of a V-8 equal a new class standard."
All nominees for the competition were judged in nine subjective and objective categories. In addition to the categories mentioned above, scores were also tallied in the subjective categories of Styling & Design, Quality Control, Occupant Comfort & Convenience, and Utility & Function.
After each truck was scored by six MOTOR TREND editors, the results were tabulated by the accounting firm of Ernst & Young.
Details of the competition, including the testing and evaluation process, are described in the December 1992 issue of MOTOR TREND, on sale Nov. 10, 1992.
MOTOR TREND magazine is published monthly in Los Angeles by Petersen Publishing Company.
