MOTOR TREND MAGAZINE NAMES FORD CHATEAU CLUB WAGON '92 TRUCK OF THE YEAR
LOS ANGELES, Dec. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Motor Trend magazine, the world's automotive authority, today announced that the Ford Chateau Club Wagon was selected as the publication's 1992 Truck of the Year. The Chateau Club Wagon was chosen from a field of seven nominated trucks that competed in the magazine's fourth annual competition.
The Truck of the Year competition is a sister event to Motor Trend's prestigious Car of the Year and Import Car of the Year competitions. It was inaugurated in 1989 in response to the dramatic rise in consumer interest in trucks, sport/utility vehicles, and vans as personal-use transportation. The competition is conducted to identify the most significant new truck-based vehicle of each year.
The Chateau Club Wagon is the top-of-the-line passenger version of Ford's popular Econoline cargo van. The '92 model is the result of a $1.2 billion investment, and represents the first major redesign of a Ford full-size van in 17 years. In winning the competition, it was rated as the best truck by seven of the eight Motor Trend judges. It had the best scores in five of nine categories, including Styling & Design, Quality Control, Occupant Comfort & Convenience, Dollar Value and Utility & Function.
Motor Trend's editors called the Chateau Club Wagon "a quantum leap in full-size vans," and noted that "Ford did an excellent job of designing a full-size van for the next decade."
All nominees for the competition were judged in nine subjective and objective categories. In addition to the categories previously mentioned, scores were also tallied in the objective categories of Performance and Handling and the subjective categories of Ride & Drive and Chassis Dynamics.
After each truck was scored by all eight Motor Trend editors, the results were tabulated by the accounting firm of Ernst & Young.
Details of the entire testing and evaluation process for all the truck candidates and the reasons for the selection of the Ford Chateau Club Wagon are described in the January 1992 issue of Motor Trend, on sale Dec. 10, 1991.
Motor Trend magazine is published monthly in Los Angeles by Petersen Publishing Company.
