MOTOR MAX: How do I check a car's history?

Q I'm looking to buy a second-hand motor. I've had enough problems trying to find a good one - but I'm worried it may have been 'clocked'.

What advice can you offer me to help check?

STEVE LESTER, Shropshire

Sister Spanner says: Clocking is the practice of altering the mileage on the odometer. Dodgy salesmen lower the recorded mileage to drive up the price of the car. To be sure you're not buying a clocked car contact the HPI independent vehicle checking service at website www.hpicheck.com or telephone 01722 422 422.

ON TRACK TO FIRM BONDING

Q I'm a company boss and want to take my team on a driving experience day to help with office bonding. Where do you suggest I try?

THOMAS GILLESPIE, Birmingham

Dr Dashboard says: I've recently been sent details of a new facility called The Driving Centre based at Prestwold, near junction 23 of the M1, Leicestershire. Facilities include a 1.8-mile Tarmac circuit, a loose gravel rally stage, off-road circuits and karting arena. For more details visit www.thedrivingcentre.com or e-mail info@thedrivingcentre.com

LOWDOWN ON HOT CLASSIC

Q I'm a classic car fan and I was wondering if you could tell me how fast the Morris Minor 1000 could accelerate? It's one of my favourite classics.

SHEILA LAWRENCE, Warwickshire

Sister Spanner says: The Morris Minor 1000, a common sight on the roads in the 1960s and 1970s, had a 1,098cc engine which was capable of taking the car from start to 50mph in 16.1 seconds. Its price in 1963 was pounds 515.
