MOTOR MAX: Flexible Vauxhall aims for 10,000.

VAUXHALL'S new five-seater Meriva goes on sale later this month and is already on target to meet its expected sales figure of 10,000 by the end of the year.

The Meriva joins the executive Signum model, which is also launched this month.

The Meriva is a true compact MPV, which is easy to park and manoeuvre thanks to an overall length of just 159 inches.

It also boasts a flexible seating set-up that transforms the interior from a five-seater with 350 litres of luggage space into a two-seater giving a flat 1.7-metre cargo area, or a van-like single-seater by using the optional fold-flat front passenger seat. As with the larger Zafira model, it is not necessary to take any of the seats out. Meriva prices start at pounds 10,995.

The Signum also makes use of flexible seating to offer versatility and comfort for two, or an occasional third rear passenger.

It comes with three new engines, including a 3.0-litre, V6, CDTi, common rail turbo diesel offering a combination of 0-60mph acceleration in 8.4 seconds, a top speed of 137mph, and 35mpg. The two other diesels are a 2.0-litre and 2.2-litre DTi.

The petrol-engined models benefit from the 20,000-mile/two-year service intervals, and the diesels go one better with a maximum service interval of 30,000 miles or two years.

Service intervals are determined by the built-in electronic service monitor.

Signum prices range from pounds 17,995 to pounds 25,600.
