MOTHERS WORK, INC. ACQUIRES PAGE BOY MATERNITY; VANA LONGWELL NAMED VICE PRESIDENT AND GENERAL MERCHANDISING MANAGER

 PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Mothers Work, Inc. (NASDAQ: MWRK), the leading specialty retailer of upscale maternity clothing, today announced that it had entered into an agreement to acquire through merger The Page Boy Company, Inc., the Dallas-headquartered chain of 22 specialty maternity stores.
 The transaction is subject to certain conditions and it is anticipated that it will close within a month. In support of that growth, Mothers Work, Inc. is adding two new Vice Presidents.
 Robert E. Pollock, 36, currently Chief Operating Officer of Page Boy Maternity will join Mothers Work, Inc. as Vice President - Real Estate, a new position at the company, upon consummation of the Page Boy acquisition.
 Rebecca Matthias, President and Chief Operating Officer of Mothers Work, Inc. said, "We are very pleased to be acquiring Page Boy, and Bob Pollock will be an outstanding addition to our management team. With Page Boy's locations in many leading upscale malls, the acquisition is the natural next step in our aggressive store expansion program. Wherever feasible, we will convert Page Boy stores to Mothers Work or Mimi Maternity stores."
 Page Boy Maternity, with 22 stores in regional malls in 15 states, had revenues for calendar year 1993 of approximately $7 million.
 Robert E. Pollock has served as Chief Operating Officer of Page Boy Maternity since 1986, when he joined the company, which was co-founded by his stepmother, Elsie Pollock and her sister, Edna Ravkind. Prior to joining the company, he was attorney with Loeb & Loeb, a national law firm headquartered in Los Angeles. Mr. Pollock received his JD in 1983 from University of Southern California Law School and his BA, Phi Beta Kappa in English Literature in 1980 from the University of California.
 Mr. Pollock and his wife, Laura Lewis, an author and talk radio host, and their two daughters will be relocating to Philadelphia later this month.
 Mothers Work also named Vana Longwell, 47, Vice President and General Merchandising Manager. The position had been unfilled since April 1993.
 As Vice President and General Merchandising Manager, Ms. Longwell will have overall responsibility for product development and merchandising for both the Mothers Work and Mimi Maternity store chains.

 Ms. Longwell joins Mothers Work, Inc. with over 20 years of sales, design, development and production experience for women's career, casual and special occasion wear. Prior to joining Mothers Work, Inc. Ms. Longwell was President of Wainscott Sportswear in New York, (Division of Fang Brothers, Hong Kong) where she had overall profit and loss responsibility for this $40 million private label manufacturer of moderate to better sportswear. From 1989-1990, she was President of Greenwich Mean Time in New York where she was responsible for all sales, product development and production for this manufacturer of moderate to better women's sportswear and dresses for such customers as JC Penney, Belk Stores, Talbot's, Joseph Banks and Braemer. From 1972-1988, Ms. Longwell was associated with Apparel Affiliates Inc. of New York (and predecessor companies) in increasingly more responsible positions including Executive Vice President and General Merchandise Manager of the 84 stores of the Ladybug, Paraphernalia and Corner House divisions.
 Mothers Work, Inc. is the leading specialty retailer of upscale maternity clothing. It is vertically integrated and currently has 113 stores located primarily in upscale regional malls across the country, sourcing most of its full range of career, casual and special occasion maternity wear at its Philadelphia headquarters utilizing its Real Time Retailing(asterisk) quick response process. The Company operates 70 Mothers Work stores, 32 Mimi Maternity stores and 11 outlet stores .
