MOST NICOTINE PATCH USERS DOOMED TO FAIL
 DURHAM, N.C., June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Since prescription nicotine

skin patches hit the market, millions of smokers have donned the BandAid(R)-like devices in hopes of finally breaking their addiction to cigarettes. "Nine out of ten of these patch users will soon return to smoking," estimated Dr. Robert Shipley, "because they rely only on the patch." Dr. Shipley directs the Stop Smoking Program at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.
Shipley pointed out that smokers are enslaved not only by physical addiction to nicotine, but by emotional dependence and habit. "Anything you do hundreds of thousands of times gets to be quite a habit," Shipley said. Smokers repeatedly pair puffs on cigarettes with such things as talking on the phone, taking a break from work, and driving a car. After a person quits smoking, these activities can create strong urges for cigarettes.
Emotional dependence on smoking is another link in the complicated chain that binds a smoker to cigarettes, according to Shipley. "A cigarette keeps the smoker company and helps him or her deal with boredom, anger, and anxiety. Is it any wonder that many folks get depressed when they give up cigarettes?"
Shipley does not deny the importance of treating nicotine addiction and sees the new nicotine patch as a wonderful aid to quitting. But he asserted, "The nicotine skin patch alone will not do the trick for most smokers. The patch is a great help in overcoming chemical addiction, but quitters also need help with their strong smoking habit and their emotional dependence on cigarettes."
"Patch users should attend a comprehensive stop smoking clinic," asserted Shipley. However, he admited that most people will not go to the trouble and expense of attending a clinic. For these people, Shipley has created the QuitSmart Stop Smoking Kit. The kit includes a realistic patented cigarette substitute to help overcome the habit of handling and puffing on a cigarette, and a hypnosis audio tape to help overcome emotional dependence on cigarettes.
Shipley has not forgotten the problem of physical addiction. His QuitSmart Kit also includes a 96-page guide that gives several new ways to break physical addiction. A chapter by Dr. Jed Rose, an inventor of the nicotine skin patch, answers questions about the patch and gives detailed guidance on using the patch.
The QuitSmart Kit is available at Kerr Drug Stores in North Carolina, and at many bookstores or by mail for $24.95 from JB Press, PO Box 4843-P, Duke Station, Durham, N.C. 27706; 919-644-0736.
QuitSmart Stop Smoking Resources is a leading smoking-cessation program and product developer located in Durham, N.C., that has helped over 40,000 smokers break free from cigarettes.
