 MORTON INTERNATIONAL ACQUIRES MANUFACTURING FACILITY
IN OGDEN, UTAH, TO MEET ADDITIONAL AIRBAG GROWTH
CHICAGO, April 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Morton's Automotive Safety Products group has acquired another 250,000 square feet of manufacturing space near its headquarter's building in Ogden, Utah. The building was bought from the Volvo-GM Heavy Truck Corporation for an undisclosed sum.
"Morton is delighted to be able to buy this building in Utah," said Kenneth D. Holmgren, president of Automotive Safety Products. "We plan to manufacture modules consisting of the bag, inflator and cover for both the driver and passenger sides of the car in this location."
The building, located on almost 90 acres of land, has 65 undeveloped acres for future expansion. With the addition of 250,000 square feet of manufacturing space, Morton now has a total of almost 1 million square feet of space at its Brigham City, Utah, and two Ogden locations. In addition, Morton does its chemical processing in Promontory, Utah.
"Morton's commitment to Utah is substantial," said Holmgren. "We have found that the quality of the work force matches the quality of the product we make. With the anticipated growth of airbags, which will go into all new cars, trucks and vans sold in the U.S. before the end of the decade, we expect to more than double our employment."
In addition to Morton's growth, several suppliers have chosen Utah for supplying components to Morton. These include OEA Inc., a Denver-based manufacturer of initiators and American Pacific, a manufacturer of sodium azide.
Morton expects to see additional airbag growth in Europe and currently is studying alternative sites for manufacturing there. There are substantially more passenger cars sold in Europe than in the United States.
Morton International is a Chicago-based manufacturer and marketer of specialty chemicals, automotive inflatable restraint systems and salt.
