 MORRISON KNUDSEN'S NORTH PACIFIC OPERATIONS
WIN TWO CONTRACTS IN HAWAII TOTALLING $87 MILLION
BOISE, Idaho, Aug. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Morrison Knudsen Corp. (MK) (NYSE: MRN) announced today that E.E. Black, MK's Honolulu-based subsidiary, and a joint-venture partner have signed a $58-million contract to construct a freeway interchange for the Hawaii Department of Transportation.
In addition, MK announced that another subsidiary based in Honolulu, G.W. Murphy Construction Co., has received a $29-million contract from the State of Hawaii to renovate and remodel the state's capitol building in Honolulu.
"These projects are part of MK's North Pacific strategy to play a significant role in Hawaii's growth," said William J. Agee, the company's chairman and chief executive officer. "We are especially committed to helping Hawaii solve its transportation problems."
A joint venture of E.E. Black (sponsor and 60-percent participant) and SCI Engineers and Constructors, won the contract to build the freeway interchange on Oahu's windward side near Kaneohe Marine Base. The interchange will be built at the junction of new Interstate H-3 and existing Likelike Highway.
Work will begin immediately and take an estimated two years to complete.
G.W. Murphy will renovate and remodel both the interior and exterior of the state capitol building which houses the state's legislative chambers and the governor's office. Work is scheduled to start in October and take some 20 months to complete.
MK recently acquired E.E. Black and G.W. Murphy from McConnell Dowell Corp., an Australian construction firm in which MK holds a 49-percent interest. E.E. Black is part of joint ventures at work on two other major segments of Interstate H-3 -- a viaduct and a tunnel.
