Springfield team splits two games at nationals

ROSEVILLE, Calif. - Amanda Miller threw a three-hitter to lead the McKenzie Rapids of Springfield to a 2-1 victory over Chino Hills, Calif., Tuesday in their first game of the ASA 16-and-under Class B Western national softball tournament.

Later in the day, the Rapids suffered their first tournament loss, falling 8-4 to the Fresno Rage.

Schutte third in golf tournament

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Florence's Jesse Schutte dropped to third place after shooting a 4-over-par 76 Tuesday in the second round of the Big I Junior Classic golf tournament.

The first-round co-leader had an even-par 144 total, four strokes behind Cameron Edens, who shot a 66 Tuesday.

On Tuesday, Schutte and Eugene's Jack Dukeminier were named to one of two Oregon teams that will compete in Portland Aug. 13-15 in the 37th annual Eddie Hogan Cup, which matches 12 teams representing golf associations in the western United States and Canada.

Monaco ties for third in Portland tournament

PORTLAND - Bobby Moncaco of Eugene shot a 6-over-par 78 Tuesday to finish tied for third place in the intermediate boys division of the Portland City Bob Allard Memorial Championship at Rose City Golf Course.

Other area golfers in the top 10 of their divisions were Eugene's Austin Atkinson (tied for seventh, junior boys), Phil Bagdade (tied for seventh, boys) and Sophie Elstrott (eighth, intermediate girls) and North Bend's Kellie Holmstedt (ninth, girls).
