MORGAN CREEK SETS BRUCE BERESFORD AS DIRECTOR OF 'INDIAN SUMMER'
LOS ANGELES, May 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Morgan Creek Productions has set the director of 1989's Oscar-winning film "Driving Miss Daisy," Bruce Beresford, as the director of its upcoming drama "Indian Summer," it was announced today by Chairman and Chief Executive Officer James G. Robinson.
"Indian Summer" is a dramatic murder-mystery set against a New England background about a psychiatrist trying to unravel a murder through the only witness, an autistic boy.
A first-time script by Akiva Goldsman, the film will be produced by Jim Kouf and Lynn Bigelow and is expected to go before the cameras in early 1993. Warner Bros. will release domestically with Morgan Creek International handling all foreign.
"We are thrilled to have concluded a deal with Bruce Beresford to direct what we feel will be one of the most prestigious pictures Morgan Creek has made to date," stated Robinson. "His ability to direct award- winning performances is a matter of record, and we feel he will bring a special vision and sensitivity to this material, which is one of the best scripts I've read," he continued.
"We have worked very patiently to collaborate with the right director for this special material. Bruce's strength lies in complex dramatic situations which perfectly suits this picture," stated David Nicksay, president, Morgan Creek Productions. "Yet the relationship between the psychiatrist and the boy has a lot of humor as well, which I know Bruce can handle in a realistic and heartwarming manner. I'm very enthusiastic about working with him," he continued.
The Australian-born Beresford, who in recent years has become one of the most acclaimed directors of American features, is particularly adept at directing character-driven pieces like "Tender Mercies," for which Robert Duvall received an Oscar, and "Driving Miss Daisy," which received nine Oscar nominations and won Best Picture. Among Beresford's other outstanding film credits are "Breaker Morant" and the recently heralded "The Black Robe." The director most recently completed work on "Rich In Love," which will be released in the fall by MGM.
To date, no casting has been announced on "Indian Summer." The film offers an outstanding role for a top actor to portray the troubled psychiatrist confronted with an unusual murder case as well as two outstanding roles for teen-agers. Although production will not begin until mid-1993 Morgan Creek expects to set the male lead shortly.
