MORGAN CREEK ACQUIRES TONY SCOTT'S 'TRUE ROMANCE'
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Morgan Creek Productions has acquired all domestic and United Kingdom rights to the upcoming Tony Scott rock 'n' roll adventure, "True Romance," it was announced today by James G. Robinson, chairman and chief executive officer of Morgan Creek Productions.
The film, which will begin a 12-week shoot in Los Angeles on Sept. 15, features an all-star cast including Christian Slater, Gary Oldman, Val Kilmer, Brad Pitt, Patricia Arquette and Dennis Hopper. It will be directed by Scott, whose previous film credits include three of the top grossing films of all time: "Days of Thunder," "Beverly Hills Cop 2" and "Top Gun," as well as "The Last Boy Scout." Quentin Tarantino ("Reservoir Dogs") wrote the original screenplay.
"True Romance" will be produced by Bill Unger, Sammy Hadida and Steve Perry and is being readied by Morgan Creek for release via Warner Bros. in the summer of 1993.
The film deals with a pair of young lovers who, after a brush with the Detroit mob, flee the city to Los Angeles with a suitcase of contraband pursued by the mob and the police.
"We're delighted to be involved with Tony Scott and this exciting young ensemble cast," stated Robinson. "We feel it has all the potential of being another high-profile film."
Morgan Creek acquired all rights to the film for the United States and Canada and the United Kingdom. "True Romance" will be distributed by Morgan Creek via its ongoing distribution agreement with Warner Bros. and be handled in the United Kingdom by Morgan Creek International.
Slater recently starred as the rebellious Will Scarlet in Morgan Creek's 1991 blockbuster "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves." He has also previously worked with Morgan Creek on the hit "Young Guns II." His other screen credits include "Pump Up the Volume," "Heathers" and the recent comedy adventure "Kuffs."
Oldman has just completed the starring role in Francis Ford Coppola's "Brahm Stoker's Dracula" due for release this fall. His other credits include "JFK" and "Sid & Nancy."
Kilmer's screen credits include the mystic-thriller "Thunderheart" and Oliver Stone's "The Doors," in which he played Jim Morrison. He previously teamed with Scott on the mega-hit "Top Gun."
Pitt's film credits include Ridley Scott's Oscar-winning "Thelma & Louise" and the animated live-action adventure "Cool World."
