MORE AND MORE COMPANIES ARE 'TRYING OUT' EMPLOYEES BEFORE HIRING THEM, ACCORDING TO SNELLING PERSONNEL SERVICES SURVEY

DALLAS, July 22 /PRNewswire/ -- An increasing number of corporations are "trying out" employees on a temporary basis before making a commitment to hire them, according to a survey by Snelling Personnel Services.
Over the past year, Snelling placement specialists have seen the temp-to-hire(SM) trend grow nearly 50 percent (46 percent). Temp-to- hire(SM) means that a prospective employee works for a company on temporary assignment until such time as the employee and company decide that the arrangement should become regular full-time. During the temporary assignment period, the person is employed by the personnel services firm, e.g. Snelling.
"The Temp-to-Hire(SM) process is proving to be a benefit for both employer and employee," said Robert O. Snelling Sr., chairman of Snelling Personnel Services. "For the employers, it gives them a chance to evaluate an employee's performance and attitude before making an offer of full-time employment. In addition, during this period, they pay only for the actual time the employee works.
"For the employees, it gives them a chance to be hired, sometimes in a position that might not have been open otherwise, and prove themselves to the potential employer. They can decide whether or not they like the boss, the coworkers and the company's atmosphere and policies."
While the majority (60 percent) of Temp-to-Hire(SM) employees are placed in clerical positions (secretary, receptionist, word processor, bookkeeper, etc.), an increasing number of other positions are now being filled by Temp-to-Hire(SM) employees, according to survey of the more than 275 Snelling Personnel Services offices. Sixteen percent of the Temp-to-Hire(SM) placements by Snelling were accountants, while 13 percent were light industrial workers and 5 percent were engineers. Other areas where Temp-to-Hire(TM) is catching on include data processing (programmers) and health care (nurses).
The length of the temporary assignment, before the person goes on the company payroll full-time, ranges from 13 weeks (55 percent) up to six months, even though the decision to bring the employee on board as a regular member may come sooner.
"Until the decision is made to hire by the company and the prospective employee accepts the offer, there is no obligation on either party," said Mr. Snelling. "Neither has to feel guilty about walking away from the situation at any time."
The trend has very positive implications for people looking for jobs, Mr. Snelling added. The survey shows that a vast majority (87 percent) of individuals on Temp-to-Hire(SM) assignments are offered and accept the regular full-time positions.
"This is a hidden job market for those looking for a job," said Mr. Snelling. "Most Temp-to-Hire(SM) positions are not even advertised in the newspapers."
