MONTGOMERY WARD & CO. SELECTS HUGHES FOR NATIONWIDE SATELLITE NETWORK

CHICAGO, Feb. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Chicago-based retailer Montgomery Ward & Co. has awarded a multimillion-dollar contract for satellite networking equipment and services to Hughes Network Systems, Inc. This strategic alliance between Montgomery Ward and Hughes included a multisite pilot program to test a variety of key telecommunications applications.
Under terms of the agreement, Hughes will install a 1-meter Personal Earth Station very small aperture terminal (VSAT) unit atop each of Montgomery Ward's 350 retail locations nationwide. The VSATs will effectively replace terrestrial data circuits for much of the company's telecommunications needs, beaming encoded data from each location to a Hughes satellite hovering 23,000 miles above the earth. There, the signals will be relayed to a hub earth station located at Montgomery Ward's headquarters in Chicago and routed to the company's corporate data center.
The new network will support key operations such as check and credit authorization, inventory management, sales volume reporting and pricing changes. Video and in-store music broadcasts may also be added at a later date.
Bernard F. Brennan, chairman and CEO of Montgomery Ward & Co., Incorporated, stated: ``We selected Hughes as the vendor most capable of helping Montgomery Ward achieve its goal of prominence in retailing through attention to customer satisfaction. The advanced technology offered by the Hughes network will help to ensure efficient and cost- effective communications operations.''
Montgomery Ward, the value-driven specialty retail company, has sales in excess of $5.0 billion. In 1988, management led a $3.8 billion L.B.O. that was the largest of its kind. Since the buyout, Montgomery Ward has been on an aggressive growth plan, opening over 50 stores during the last five years.
Pradman Kaul, president of Hughes Network Systems, hailed the contract as a landmark in the retail industry. ``We are pleased to have been selected by this prestigious retailer for an advanced, nationwide satellite network. We look forward to a long and rewarding relationship with Montgomery Ward.''
Network rollout is scheduled to begin immediately, with completion targeted for third quarter 1993, in time to support the servicing of the retailer's increased holiday customer traffic.
Hughes Personal Earth Station networks constitute a two-way interactive system that provides telecommunications between a central hub facility and a virtually unlimited number of remote terminals. Operating with either a dedicated network hub or shared facility, the network supports both synchronous and asynchonrous data, as well as voice telephony and broadcast-quality video. The system is ideal for replacing or expanding existing networks, providing higher quality, lower cost communications through the elimination of leased lines and local connections.
Hughes Network Systems, Inc. is a world leader in advanced digital telecommunications. The premier provider of interactive VSATs, HNS offers communications network solutions that include the Gemini(tm) earth station, Telephony Earth Station(tm), and in TELEconference(tm) videoconferencing systems.
