MONTANA POWER UNIT COMPLETES LARGE COAL SALE TO TAMPA ELECTRIC

WESTON, Colo., April 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Basin Resources, which operates the Golden Eagle Mine at Weston, announced today it has entered into a long-term contract to provide Tampa Electric Co. with up to 1.2 million tons per year of high-quality, low-sulfur coal, according to The Montana Power Co. (NYSE: MTP).
Tampa Electric is an investor-owned utility and the principal subsidiary of TECO Energy Inc. (NYSE: TE), of Tampa, Fla. Basin Resources in a unit of the Coal Division of Entech Inc., a wholly owned, nonutility subsidiary of The Montana Power Co.
Coal deliveries will begin in July 1994, with up to 600,000 tons to be delivered during the last half of the year. The contract represents about half of Basin Resources' annual production capacity of 2.2 million tons.
Tampa Electric conducted an extensive search for the right coal product that would enable it to meet new clean air standards which become effective in 1995. Basin's Golden Eagle mine produces a low- sulfur, high-Btu coal with a low ash fusion temperature that can be blended with other coals to maintain high plant operating standards while complying with the new air quality regulations.
Montana Power's Entech Coal Division in 1992 mined 22.2 million tons of coal at mines in Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and Texas, and ranks among the nation's 10 largest coal producers.
