MONDEO BOOSTS FORD'S EUROPEAN CAR SALES

DEARBORN, Mich., April 15 /PRNewswire/ -- In its first month on the market, the new Ford Mondeo has boosted Ford Motor Company's (NYSE: F) European car market share for March to 12.5 percent, 0.5 of a point higher than last year and its best March tally since 1984.
"Mondeo has been very well received in all our European markets, particularly France, Italy and Spain," said Don Cook, vice president - Sales, Ford of Europe. "Customer orders taken in March approached 38,000 units across Europe and more than 22,000 have already been delivered. Moreover, we have some 132,000 Mondeo orders in the system, in spite of the fact that some countries did not launch until the end of March.
"Additionally, the close-out period for the Ford Sierra has been very successful, with demand continuing right up to the end. More than 3.3 million Sierras have been sold across Europe since introduction in 1982."
For the first quarter, Ford's European car share increased to 12.1 percent, up 0.3 of a point over last year, despite a 16 percent decline in industry sales.
Ford's commercial vehicle sales have seen similar success during the first quarter. Ford's share of the commercial vehicle market rose to 12.6 percent, up 0.6 of a point over last year and the highest first quarter figure since 1980. Record March sales were reported for France and Spain, just two of the six major European markets in which Ford commercial vehicles enjoyed an increase in market share over the same period last year.
"These gains were attributable mainly to the company's success in the light commercial market, with the class-leading Ford Courier consolidating its share gains made in 1992, and the Ford Escort Van significantly increasing its portion of this segment," Mr. Cook said.
Despite these encouraging results, the economic outlook across Western Europe generally continues to be bleak, with car sales predicted to be down about 16 percent. Britain, where the car industry is up 15 percent, is the only major European market to have reported an increase in sales over 1992.
