MOMS OF THE '90s LOOK FOR NEW WAYS TO SOLVE OLD WOES

MOMS OF THE '90s LOOK FOR NEW WAYS TO SOLVE OLD WOES
BIRMINGHAM, Mich., April 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Mom chauffeuring the

kids to all their activities: It's one of the many hats the "super mom" of the last few decades has worn as she tried to mesh a demanding career with the full responsibilities of family life. We even created a special name for her: the "car pool mom."
Not anymore. A Birmingham mother of three has come up with the perfect solution for moms (and dads) who have a lot of chauffeuring to do and only a little time to do it: KIDS KAB(TM), Inc.
A transportation service designed especially for the younger set, KIDS KAB shuttles children from home to their destinations and back. Complete with a fully trained and licensed driver, each KIDS KAB van holds up to 12 passengers.
Pam Henderson, KIDS KAB founder and president, cooked up the concept when confronted with her own transportation problem: One day her three children needed to be in different places at the same time. That's when she threw in her chauffeur's hat and began planning to open her own transportation company.
"In many families nowadays, both parents work and children participate in many activities outside the home," said Henderson. "That means that children's transportation needs often cannot be met."
The figures are clear: In 1990, 50 percent of all women re-entered the work force by the time their children reached the age of 2, and by the end of the '90s, 47 percent of the work force in the United States will be female. At the same time, children are devoting more and more time to activities outside of the home.
When KIDS KAB made its first trip on June 17, 1991, the response was overwhelming. Within a few days, Henderson found herself with 300 school accounts, 50 individual subscribers and a small fleet of vans serving the metro Detroit area. "We've had moms chasing down our vans trying to find out how to get ahold of us," said Henderson.
She plans to expand her operation by opening franchises in the Detroit area and nationwide. "We've been successful because there is really a need for this type of service -- on a local and national level," she said.
Ease of use is part of the reason for KIDS KAB's success. Parents register their children for services by paying a nominal annual fee. Parents then identify the number of trips children need and prepay transportation fees each month. KIDS KAB staff coordinate transportation schedules and issue each child a photo ID, which the child presents at the beginning of each trip. The service operates from 6 a.m. to midnight on weekdays and offers special day trips to local attractions on the weekends.
KIDS KAB is a transportation service for children ages 2 through young adults. KIDS KAB also provides transportation for groups of all ages, including senior groups, day care centers, schools, youth organizations, scouting troops, sports teams, church clubs, YMCAs, summer camps, recreational groups and colleges. It is headquartered in Birmingham.
