Dip molding probably isn't a term that readily comes to mind when surgeons begin complicated procedures. Yet without this sophisticated, highly controllable process, many medical devices used daily in hospitals could not meet stringent certification requirements. Although dip molding has been around for decades, many design engineers and manufacturers are unaware of the full scope of its capabilities and possibilities.

Dip molding is a process wherein mandrels or cores are dipped into a polymer to form the geometry of a product. The process can create non-slip, cushioned gripping surfaces. It can also make surfaces that protect against abrasion and corrosion, provide electrical insulation, and enhance a product's appearance for sales appeal.
