MOCON ANNOUNCES TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT AT ANNUAL MEETING

MINNEAPOLIS, May 18 /PRNewswire/ -- MOCON (Modern Controls, Inc.) (NASDAQ-NMS: MOCO), today announced a new development effort involving NiCad battery reactivation.
One billion NiCad batteries were produced last year worldwide with 300 million sold in the U.S. alone. All dead NiCads are considered hazardous waste which create a significant disposal task.
"Our process reactivates these exhausted batteries to greater than 90 percent of their original capacity according to our initial testing," said William N. Mayer, chairman and CEO. "This early data, mainly on cellular telephone NiCad batteries, is very promising," Mayer continued. "Although there are no assurances of a successful completion of this project, the early stages of development look solid and we are cautiously optimistic. If the technology proves to be successful, the commercial viability of reactivating batteries will need to be determined."
In addition to the financial implications of reactivating NiCad batteries and reselling them to large end-users within the marketplace, the contribution to environmental concerns is significant. NiCad batteries are considered hazardous waste and disposal is of major concern to the environment. Reactivation would allow these batteries to return to useful purposes instead of being sent to disposal sites.
