ORLANDO, Fla., Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- MobileComm, BellSouth's (NYSE: BLS) paging subsidiary, has announced that it will be the exclusive wireless messaging service provider for Simon(TM), a revolutionary personal communicator unveiled at Wireless World.
Designed by IBM (NYSE: IBM), Simon is the first fully integrated, handheld cellular phone, wireless facsimile machine (send/receive), pager, electronic mail, calendar, appointment scheduler, address book, calculator and pen-based notepad/sketchpad. Simon will be exclusively distributed in the U.S. by BellSouth Cellular Corp. (BSCC).
Simon's wireless PCMCIA messaging receiver, manufactured by Motorola, will be exclusively distributed in the U.S. by MobileComm.
"MobileComm is proud to be a part of the BellSouth family of companies supporting the roll-out of this product," said Steve Pazian, president and CEO of MobileComm. "With Simon's PCMCIA wireless messaging and cellular capabilities, customers will truly benefit from the convergence of these technologies."
When equipped with the optional PCMCIA card, being manufactured by Motorola, users can receive text messages wirelessly over the MobileComm network from different points of origin, including operator dispatch, personal computer equipped with a modem and MobileComm Messaging Software, and E-mail systems. Also, users will not have to have Simon with them and turned on to receive a text message anywhere, anytime. The PCMCIA card will receive the message and hold it until the user is ready to retrieve it.
"By incorporating voice communications, fax, E-mail and paging, Simon offers users a full array of communications functions," said Al Testani, general manager of Peripheral Products for IBM Personal Computer Company in Somers, N.Y. "We met our challenge to take that level of functionality and make it truly portable."
An exclusive message delivery option, MobileComm MessageLink, will give subscribers the ability to prioritize message delivery, thereby lowering the rates for information that is sent over the network at off- peak times. The mobile professional can take the wirelessly received information and integrate it with the other functions, such as the calendar or date book.
Subscribers can receive MobileComm nationwide coverage which includes over 550 markets throughout all 50 states, Canada, Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, or they can subscribe to coverage in one, two or three of the five MobileComm regions, allowing for broad geographic versatility in service. City-to-city roaming (MobileComm's CityLink service), which allows subscribers to move their coverage to any of the 550 markets in the MobileComm network, is a third coverage option that is available.
Weighing in at just over a pound, Simon looks like a small portable phone with a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) as a keypad and touch screen. A graphical user interface, or GUI, uses icons to help the customer move from application to application simply and effortlessly.
Utilizing pen annotation technology, faxes and memos can be created by using the built-in pen touch screens, or by writing directly on the screen using a stylus. A customer can make notes in his or her own hand, on faxes received by the unit, and then resend the fax over the cellular or landline network.
Distribution of Simon is scheduled for December in Orlando, Daytona Beach, Jacksonville and Melbourne, Fla. A phased roll-out will move Simon into other BSCC markets by March 1994, with nationwide distribution by April.
Based in Jackson, Miss., MobileComm has been providing wireless communication services in markets coast-to-coast for almost 30 years. With more than 100 local offices nationwide, the company and its affiliates have over 1.3 million pagers in service.
