JACKSON, Miss., Aug. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- MobileComm, the BellSouth subsidiary which pioneered nationwide text messaging in the U.S. and Canada, blazed new trails Monday with the announcement of an agreement to provide wireless messaging service to Apple Computer's Newton(a) MessagePad(a).
The Newton MessagePad is a handheld communications assistant that allows people to gather, manage, and share information with tremendous ease and spontaneity. The communication capabilities in the MessagePad allow users to send, receive and share information through virtually every communication method in the workplace today -- through telephone lines, wireless networks and computer networks.
Newton technology is licensed to several leading corporations around the world, including Sharp, Matsushita, Siemens/Rolm and Motorola.
"Like Apple Computer, Inc., MobileComm has long realized the growing importance of mobility and communications flexibility in today's world," MobileComm President and CEO, Steve Pazian, said. "Both companies share a common vision of meeting these needs with products and services which are affordable and easy to use."
The Newton MessagePad is currently available in selected markets at authorized Apple dealers and distributors and will soon be rolled-out nationally. The wireless service, to be known as "Apple Wireless Messaging Service," will be available in the fall.
With the Newton MessageCard, a lightweight, credit-card sized receiver manufactured for Apple by Motorola, MessagePad users will be able to receive postcard length messages which will be transmitted over the MobileComm paging network. Newton intelligence gives the MessagePad users unique capabilities to act upon information received wirelessly. The Newton MessageCard will be available on a purchase or lease basis.
Initially available with Nationwide and CityLink coverage, Newton MessagePad users who have the MessageCard will also be able to choose local/wide area or regional coverage.
"The Newton family is all about communications, and we looked for a paging partner that could help us deliver on the promise of flexible communications anywhere, anytime," said Gaston Bastiaens, vice president and general manager of Apple's Personal Interactive Electronics (PIE) division. "We selected MobileComm because of their experience in wireless communications and proven record in providing powerful solutions in this fast-expanding market."
Dr. Alain Briancon, executive director Product and Services Development Department, at MobileComm, had met with Apple representatives to demonstrate MobileComm capabilities and goals. "This is just the beginning of our convergence with the unprecedented technology being unveiled for the mobile consumer today," Briancon said. "MobileComm has pursued, and will continue to purse, other strategic partners as we strive to remain on the leading edge of wireless communications development."
In recent months, MobileComm has partnered with such retailers as Service Merchandise, Radio Shack, and Wal-Mart bringing paging to retail consumers across the United States by way of its PersonalPager product line.
According to Pazian, "MobileComm will also be establishing network service arrangements with other paging carriers in markets where we currently don't have local coverage. These carriers will also benefit from our Apple partnership."
Currently, MobileComm provides nationwide messaging in over 550 cities across the U.S. and Canada including Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, and is continuing to expand service and coverage areas.
Headquartered in Cupertino, Calif., Apple Computer, Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) develops, manufactures and markets computer systems for use in business, education, home, science, engineering and government. A recognized pioneer and innovator in the personal computer industry, Apple does business in more than 120 countries.
