 MOBILECOMM INTRODUCES UNIQUE CITYLINK SERVICE
SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- MobileComm introduced the

next generation in paging services today with the announcement of a unique and revolutionary system that allows its paging subscribers to extend local coverage to almost any area of the United States. Steve Burdette, vice president of Nationwide Messaging, made the announcement during a press conference at the Mobile Communications Marketplace.
The new system, known as MobileComm CityLink Messaging, will allow a subscriber to temporarily move his or her coverage area to one of the 540 U.S. and Canadian metropolitan markets covered by MobileComm's Nationwide Messaging Service.
The ability to selectively move service coverage area gives the paging subscriber the benefits of nationwide messaging, but at a reduced cost. "We're confident that this product will appeal not only to paging subscribers, but also to other paging carriers who will want to offer an exceptional, high-value product to their customers," Burdette said.
Burdette said that the company's nationwide and regional paging systems have met the communications needs of frequent business travelers. However, in many cases, the local paging subscriber who travels occasionally may not have an efficient and cost-effective system to fill their personal communications needs.
"Rapidly growing segments of our subscribers need flexibility in their service to stay in touch when they travel out of their home service area," Burdette said. "MobileComm CityLink is designed to match coverage to specific travel needs and makes multiple coverage areas available at 30 percent less than MobileComm Nationwide Messaging.
"Let's assume that a customer conducts the majority of his business in the Dallas area," Burdette said. "But he knows that to serve a major account, he must travel to Atlanta about once a quarter. Through MobileComm CityLink -- with its ability to move coverage area -- he ensures continued contact with his Dallas office and customers while he is in Atlanta.
"In those terms, our product is similar to the 'Follow Me Roaming' and call- forwarding features found in the telephone and cellular markets," Burdette said.
CityLink Messaging joins nationwide and regional coverage as options for the subscriber utilizing MobileComm's nationwide system. The company is able to offer the benefits of nationwide messaging at a lower price because CityLink efficiently uses only the network spectrum the customer needs.
With MobileComm CityLink, the customer is assigned one destination code for local coverage. This destination code represents coverage in one predetermined metropolitan area.
If traveling to another metropolitan area, the user can change destination codes by activating the MobileComm CityLink option. By accessing the Nationwide Messaging central computer with a touch-tone phone, the subscriber enters the nationwide system and is prompted through a series of brief steps.
When MobileComm CityLink is activated, the current coverage area is identified and the user is asked to enter the area code for the new location. Once the location is chosen, it is verified by the MobileComm CityLink system.
If the subscriber travels to a second destination, the process can be repeated and the coverage obtained for the new location. Arriving back in the local coverage area, the subscriber simply notifies the system of his or her return to the local destination code.
MobileComm CityLink is part of the Page Management option, which also includes Page Hold, a feature that will hold messages for up to two weeks; Page Release, which will release all held messages before Page Hold time has expired; and Page Listen and Page Resend, allowing subscribers to listen to and retrieve both numeric and text messages.
MobileComm, a subsidiary of BellSouth, has been providing paging and messaging services in markets coast to coast for more than 20 years. It is the only nationwide messaging service to cover all 50 states, Canada, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. MobileComm and its affiliates have approximately one million paging units in service.
BellSouth is an Atlanta-based, international telecommunications holding company. Its subsidiaries offer local telephone service in nine Southeastern states and mobile communications service worldwide, provide advertising and publishing services, and maintain stand-alone and fully integrated communications systems.
