MOBIL TO BOOST LOW-SULFUR DIESEL PRODUCTION IN SINGAPORE
FAIRFAX, Va., April 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobil Corporation

(NYSE: MOB) said today that its affiliate Mobil Oil Singapore has signed a $90 million contract for construction of an additional catalytic hydro-desulfurizer ("CHD") plant at its refinery in Jurong, Singapore. The project will enable production of premium diesel fuel with a very low sulfur content and is targeted for completion in the first quarter of 1994.
Capacity of this new high-pressure CHD unit will be 25 thousand barrels per day ("TBD"), and the plant will also include a 25 TBD amine unit for scrubbing gas from the CHD and a sulfur-recovery unit with a capacity of 120 tons per day.
"There's growing demand across markets served by our Jurong refinery for low-sulfur automotive diesel fuel," said John C. Simpson, president of Mobil South, Inc., a unit that coordinates marketing and refining operations among Mobil affiliates in Latin America and parts of Asia, the South Pacific, and Africa. "With the new CHD plant, we should be able to meet that demand well into the next century."
Simpson added that most nations in Jurong's market region favor a shift toward low-sulfur diesel fuel for environmental reasons. In addition to enhancing production of such fuel, the new plant will operate with minimal environmental impact by using a process that recovers sulfur from waste gases.
With a capacity of 235 thousand barrels of crude oil per day, Mobil's Jurong refinery supplies markets throughout southeast Asia. Besides this new CHD plant, Mobil is building a world-class aromatics complex at Jurong estimated to cost $635 million. When both projects are completed, Mobil's marketing and refining investment in Singapore will be over $1.4 billion.
