MOBIL ORDERS TEN DOUBLE-HULL BARGES FOR USE ON WESTERN RIVERS
FAIRFAX, Va., March 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobil Corporation (NYSE: MOB) said today that construction has commenced on 10 new double-hull barges to transport crude oil and Mobil products on the Mississippi River system and intracoastal waterways. Steel is now being cut for the barges at a shipyard in Jeffersonville, Ind., and the new barges will be on the river by the end of the year. Their total cost will be over $10 million.
Gerhard E. Kurz, president of Mobil Shipping and Transportation Co., said Mobil has more than 25 barges on the Mississippi River system and that some of those already have double hulls. "These new units are to replace 10 single-skin barges now in use," Kurz said, "and will be built to the highest standards."
In anticipation of developing state regulations, Kurz said Mobil will have vapor-recovery piping installed, and would also fit the new barges with inert-gas systems as well as cargo gauging and high-level monitor/alarms of the latest, state-of-the-art design. Such gauges and monitors should considerably reduce the possibility of spills while loading.
The barges, to be equipped with diesel-powered cargo pumps, are being built to Mobil specifications, and the company will operate them through its Marine Transportation Division. Dimensions for the new barges are typical of the trade: overall length of 240 feet, beam 54 feet, and a draft of only 9.5 feet, so the barge can fit into locks on the intracoastal waterway and upper Mississippi.
Mobil's Marine Transportation Division operates in the U. S. along the Gulf and West Coasts, the Mississippi River system, and in the Northeast region. In those areas it moves more than 100 million barrels of crude oil and Mobil products each year.
