MOBIL LAUNCHES TWO PROGRAMS TO PROVIDE FOOD AND CREATE JOBS AS PART OF ITS INNER-CITY COMMITMENT

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobil Corp. announced today a program that will generate at least $250,000 for food distribution and job training programs run by Love Is Feeding Everyone (L.I.F.E.) in Los Angeles, and more specifically the inner-city.
More than 290 Southern California Mobil dealers will donate a portion of gasoline sales during a 60-day "Show You Care" campaign. The kick-off was held at 10 a.m. today (Sept. 1) at Mobil's Manchester station, recently rebuilt and re-opened after being destroyed in the 1992 disturbances.
Attendees were welcomed by Ken Strong, Mobil's L.A. district manager, and Steve Pryor, Mobil's vice president of Fuels Marketing.
"Like many businesses that suffered damage during the civil unrest, we are committed to staying in and doing business in South-Central Los Angeles," Strong said. "That commitment includes, for the second year," supporting programs that offer new hope and new opportunities for the needy living in these areas."
Mobil presented a check for $250,000 to Valerie Harper, co-founder, L.I.F.E., and Jim Schiffner, L.I.F.E.'s president and chief executive officer, for the "Show You Care" campaign.
This year Mobil will provide computer equipment to L.I.F.E.'s operations offices to train service station cashiers in a three-week program through L.I.F.E.'s "Jobs For A Future." This is yet another step in Mobil's "Show You Care" campaign that will bring more jobs to the inner-city by training people for quality positions.
"We are pleased that Mobil has once again committed to raising money for L.I.F.E.," Harper said. "Last year, Mobil raised more than $300,000. These funds allow L.I.F.E. to maximize its effectiveness not only as a food bank, but as a leader in community-based projects."
Others joining in the campaign launch included inner-city youth members of L.I.F.E.'s "Jobs For A Future" program, which teaches participants the necessary skills to find and keep a job.
"`Jobs For A Future' was founded on the belief that a lack of jobs is at the heart of the challenges that face inner-city youth," Schiffner said. "Mobil's support of these much-needed projects will have a long- term, positive impact on the inner city."
L.I.F.E. is a non-profit food recovery and distribution organization for L.A. County. It conducts food drives and salvages edible but unsalable food that would otherwise go to waste and distributes it to more than 150 social service agencies feeding the hungry.
Participating Mobil stations will display the L.I.F.E. logo during the "Show You Care" promotion, Sept. 1 to Oct. 31.
