MOBIL BUILDS SPECIALTY CHEMICAL REACTOR TO MEET GROWING DEMAND

FAIRFAX, Va., May 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobil Chemical Company said today it started up a new $12-million reactor system in Edison, N.J., to help meet the growing demand for lube additives and synthetic fluids.
The increased demand is being driven by more stringent performance and emission standards around the world, Mobil said.
The new specialty chemicals reactor is the second reactor system built at Mobil Chemical's Edison plant since 1989. The 8,000-gallon reactor has an annual production capacity of 2 million gallons. The new system's flexible design allows production output to respond to changing market needs.
The fuel additives market alone is undergoing significant growth in response to more demanding engine and clean air requirements. The 1990 Federal Clean Air Act Amendments will require that all gasoline sold in specified areas of the Unite States contain deposit control additives by 1995.
The market for lube additives such as anti-oxidants, friction modifiers and rust inhibitors is growing. A variety of other specialty products will be created for very specific end uses to enhance performance characteristics of premium petroleum products.
Mobil Chemical Company is a unit of Mobil Corporation (NYSE: MOB).
